Getting teens to come into the public library requires savvy marketing and creative approaches to reaching out to them. Blogging is one way to do just that. This age group uses technology to communicate more than any other, and will continue to do so. Blogging is one way to reach out to them in a way they will respond to. Our public library (Bernards Township) is in the process of setting up a teen blog, ut the Cape May County library system has one already set up. It is a great venue for teens to find out what is going on for them at the library, upcoming teen programs, book reviews written by teens, podcasts and more. Not only is the blog visually appealing to teens, it separates their world from the sometimes hum-drum library world of adults.

I liked your idea of teen blog. The link you posted is definitely good way for teens to interact. My only problem is with the superman/incrdibles picture on the left.I think that is more appropriate for kids rather than teens.
ReplyDeleteVery hip. I like it.
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed! I did a quick scroll through the post archives and was surprised to see that kids are posting comments and really seem to be getting involved (like the Jan 29th podcast post). Looks like the blog is really contributing to the success of the teen program!
ReplyDeleteIn reply to the superhero party, I don't think it's too young at all. You definately need to include pre-teens (10-12) in these types of groups as they're at the age where the youth room feels too young for them, but they're not above acting like kids. :)
